What does a golfer aim for when driving?

The objective of hitting a driver from the tee is to get your ball in the best position for your next shot. Unless you are a PGA professional, like Bryson DeChambeau or Rory McIlroy you won’t be driving far enough to get the ball in the hole in one. So more often you will be playing for position to give you the easiest second shot towards the green.

What does a golfer aim for when driving

You need to make sure that you keep the golf ball away from any trouble in the rough, trees or fairway bunkers. A great pro tip is to consider whether you need to actually hit your driver from the tee, could you take a 3 wood instead? You might hit it further than a 3 wood but if you hit the ball badly it could simply be further away from your aim when driving!

If you do struggle to hit your target with the driver then a good place to start in trouble shooting might be your aim and alignment.

How to aim a golf driver?

When golfers are starting out (and a lot of experienced golfers), and learning what does a golfer aim for when driving, they practice their aim by laying alignment sticks on the floor by their feet to help them aim towards the target. This is a great drill to use at the practice range. Simply line your alignment stick up so that it is pointing towards the target. Then line your feet up so that they are horizontal to the alignment sticks. If you practice this way you will improve your feet position which will help improve your aim towards the target when driving.

A routine can help your game improve

When practicing on the range, you need to think about what does a golfer aim for when driving – you should ensure that you keep to your usual pre-shot routine. So, if you take two practice swings before your shot, then make sure you do this on the range. One excellent tip Matt suggested was to put your golf club back in your bag after taking a shot, ‘this gets you in the right mindset as it simulates what you would do on the course.’ This is a great tip!

What do golfers aim for on the practice range?

When you’re hitting shots on the driving range, keeping your normal routine, aim for different targets to simulate hitting different targets on the golf course. Don’t always keep the same target. This is the same for practicing your shorter approach shots to the imaginary green. In the video Matt used his lob wedge as he had a chip shot from 30 yards as this was the usual shot he would play on the course.
