If I asked you to name three golf ball brands, I bet you’d say Titleist, Callaway and TaylorMade.
And that’s exactly the point.
Most of us buy the same golf balls year after year without ever stopping to ask if they’re actually the best fit for our game.
That’s one of the reasons I started Up Close Golf.
I’m not trying to convince you to ditch your Pro V1 overnight, but I do want golfers to realise there are some seriously good golf balls out there that never seem to get a look in.
The Sugar Pure is one of them.
After spending some time with it on the course and, of course, letting Jeff work his magic in this Sugar Pure Golf Ball Review, I came away genuinely impressed.

Why I Decided to Review the Sugar Pure
I’ve now cut open and reviewed over 300 golf balls on Up Close Golf.
Some have been exactly what I expected.
Others have completely surprised me.
I’m not a scientist. I’m just an average golfer who’s spent over 30 years playing the game and who genuinely enjoys learning about golf balls alongside everyone watching the channel.
Having previously worked at one of the UK’s top-ranked golf courses, running Fun Golf (one of the UK’s top golf blogs), and writing an Amazon best-selling golf book has certainly helped along the way, but I’m still searching for the same thing most golfers are…
A golf ball that actually suits my game.
Sugar Pure Golf Ball Specs
The Sugar Pure is a premium three-piece urethane golf ball with:
- Three-piece construction
- Urethane cover
- 85 compression
- 322 dimple pattern
Straight away it feels like Sugar have positioned this against the premium balls rather than the budget market.
One thing I really liked during this Sugar Pure Golf Ball Review?
These don’t come in a standard box of twelve.

Instead, you get eight balls inside a little white cube designed to look like a sugar cube.
It’s different.
And honestly…
I quite like brands willing to do something a little differently.
Who Is the Sugar Pure Designed For?
This is where I think Sugar have got it right.
At 85 compression, this isn’t one of those super-soft golf balls designed purely for slower swing speeds.
It’s also nowhere near as firm as some tour-level balls.
For me, it sits in a real sweet spot.

I’d say golfers swinging somewhere around 90-105mph with the driver are probably going to get the best from it.
If you’re looking for:
- Good distance
- Plenty of greenside spin
- Solid feel
- Premium performance without feeling overly firm
…it ticks a lot of boxes.
On-Course Performance: Sugar Pure Golf Ball Review
This was the biggest surprise during the Sugar Pure Golf Ball Review.
I genuinely enjoyed playing this golf ball.
Off the Tee
It was long.
More importantly…
It was really straight.
Considering my usual miss can be a bit of a hook, that’s always appreciated.
Around the Greens
This is where premium urethane golf balls really earn their money.
The Sugar Pure checked up nicely.
Pitch shots felt predictable.
I always felt confident attacking pins because I knew roughly how the ball was going to react.
That’s something you only really notice after playing a few holes rather than just hitting balls on a launch monitor.
Could It Replace My Current Golf Ball?
This was probably the biggest compliment I could give it.
If you’ve watched the channel recently, you’ll know I’ve been gaming the Vice Pro Air.
I absolutely love that golf ball.
But after spending time with the Sugar Pure…
I’ve genuinely got a decision to make.
It deserves to be in that conversation.
I honestly didn’t expect to say that before I started testing.

Time for Jeff…
No review would be complete without bringing in Jeff.
If you’re new around here, Jeff is my golf ball cutting tool who somehow became one of the biggest stars on the channel after viewers voted to name him in a community poll.
Now he’s developed a bit of a cult following…and I completely understand why.
Every golf ball gets the Jeff treatment.
This one was no different.

Cutting the Sugar Pure Open
Once Jeff had done his thing, this is what I found.
The construction looked exactly how I’d hope a premium golf ball would look.
Inside was:
- Large central core
- Mantle layer
- Thin urethane cover
Everything looked neat.
Balanced.
Well manufactured.
There was nothing that suggested corners had been cut.
After cutting open more than 300 golf balls, you start spotting inconsistencies pretty quickly.
I didn’t see any here.
That’s reassuring.
Especially when a smaller brand says it wants to compete with the big names.

Sugar Pure Golf Ball Review: Should You Try the Sugar Pure?
I think so.
Especially if you’ve only ever bought the obvious brands.
We spend hundreds getting fitted for drivers.
Thousands on irons.
Hours researching putters.
Yet when it comes to golf balls…
Most golfers just grab whatever logo they’re familiar with.
I’ve always thought that’s a mistake.
Every now and then you discover a golf ball that genuinely surprises you.
For me…
The Sugar Pure is one of those golf balls.

My Final Verdict
Would I recommend it?
Absolutely.
Is it replacing every premium golf ball on the market?
No.
But it absolutely deserves to be part of the conversation.
If you’re already playing premium urethane golf balls, it’s worth trying.
If you’ve never looked beyond the big brands…
I’d argue it’s even more worth trying.
That’s exactly what Up Close Golf is all about.
Helping golfers discover golf balls they might otherwise never have considered.
